North makes an opening bid of 1NT (15-17 pts). East bids 2 which is alerted and explained, on request, as + a higher suit. South bids 2 which is, correctly, announced as a transfer. West passes and North bids 2 . East passes and South re-bids 3 , systemically showing points for game (at least), only 5 and an unbalanced hand with being a second suit. North now bids 4 , and South bids 5 . At this stage in the unfinished auction the TD is called.

What action, if any, should the TD take? Is North required to bid again? At the Table the TD canceled (???) South's 5 bid and required the contract to be played in 4 . South did have a doubleton , but this was not a successful contract! 11 tricks are available in a contract, and 10 tricks in a NT contract.

In the July 2009 issue of The Bridge World, a review of "Laws of Duplicate Bridge Through the Eyes of The Player" included this paragraph:

QUOTE

The text explains the Laws correctly, but further examples would have made the book more appealing. Some of the tips, though counterintuitive, are worth considering. For example: If partner is barred, you are headed for a poor score anyway. Make a strong preemptive jump, bid three notrump, or perhaps a tactical psych. You won't need to worry about partnership trust.

The first two suggestions are reasonable, but the third (the tactical psych) worries me. I suppose that the very first tactical psych that a pair uses in this situation is fine because the irregular bidder has no history of seeing partner psych in this situation.
