EVENT FLOW

#1. 7:00pm - Players are partnered up as they arrive and seat themselves. This means if you get there early and there are odd numbers, you will get to play if you are at a table with 4 players!
BREAK

#2. 8:15pm - Players are partnered up by drawing cards. High cards of like suits partner and low cards of like suits partner. If there is an odd number of players, "out" cards are included in the draw and luck determines who sits out.

BREAK

#3. 9:30pm - Players choose their partners. NOTE: most of our long standing members have regular partners. This game is competitive in nature (ie a pretty silent game) and is played to the score of 500 points without a time limit.

Games 1 & 2 are played to either 500 pnts or 1 hour which ever comes first. The 3rd game is played to 500 or when the table conceeds.

After the structured play feel free to stay and play more!

EVENT REMINDERS

FOR ANYONE ARRIVING AFTER THE START TIME - In the past we have given late arrivers and automatic "in" to the next game. However, with the increasing size of the group the more unfair this practice has become. We will now all draw for sit outs WHEN the number is uneven and it is necessary to have people sit out.

I would appreciate if everyone would remember to RSVP respectfully. Meaning don't change at the last minute, show up on time, and if you rsvp YES show up! Please remember 3 no shows and you are removed from the group! We understand and take into consideration that LIFE happens. However, no shows and late change rsvps should be the exception NOT the rule. No one likes to sit out and wait for a game ;-)

*please remember to show up early to eat
*please rsvp with the time you will be arriving (keep in mind the time each game starts!)
*please be respectful and thoughtful of fellow members time and effort, show up on time and be ready to play!
*please remember good sportsmanship conduct

STYLE OF PLAY

We play the "modern" game of spades as oppossed to the classic game. Classic being with jokers, 2 high, board of 4, blind/double nil, negotiated bidding, bump ups etc... The Modern game is played straight suits, no jokers, no board, bidding starts to the left of the dealer and continues clockwise with no bump ups or negotiating. We play with bags. Meaning, after you have 10 bags you go back 100 points in score. Bags being tricks taken above and beyond your bid. You can bid nil, making 100 points if you take no tricks and minus 100 for taking a trick. There are no blind/double nils. Spades cannot be played until they are broken.

Our group adhers to a more strict view on sportsmanlike conduct. This means we frown upon table talk, verbal cues, or smack talk.

Thomas Apartments Whist Game

photoThomas Apartments Whist Group

I run a Duplicate Whist Game in Taunton MA. on Thursday
nights twice a month.
My game is on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month at 7:00pm.

Duplicate Whist if you have never played it, is played just
like regular Whist.

The only differences are the cards are passed on trays called
boards from table to table.

Each board will take its turn in being trump starting with
Hearts then Diamonds, Spades, Clubs, and No Trump.

So basically it's the same game without cutting the deck and
dealing out on every hand.

You also play with the same partner for the whole night; you
don't change partners like in the traditional Whist Party.

You can come with a partner or come yourself.

Duplicate Whist is a good game for small groups.

We normally between 5 to 8 tables on most nights.

There are no prizes; you will just get a score card, one score
card for each pair.

The cost is free, just a donation cover refreshments.

I hope you can come we would love to have you. And bring some
folks together who like to play and enjoy the game.

Not Cards: King Richard's Faire

photoBoston Cards and Conversation

Huzzah! After last years trip to King Richard's Faire, we're decided to do it again!

For those who aren't familar with the Faire:

King Richard’s Faire is New England’s largest and longest-running Renaissance Festival. It is a vivid recreation of a 16th century English marketplace at festival time. Actors, dancers, puppeteers, jugglers, minstrels, mimes, magicians and musicians perform each weekend. Many new acts have been added to the list this year along with a jam-packed schedule of special events that encourages faire goers to join in the fun. The Faire is located in Carver, Massachusetts.

Here are some highlights from last year's trip:

For more information, visit their website: http://www.kingrichar...

HOW WE WILL MEET
We'll attempt to carpool where possible. Some of us will meet up prior to the event for breakfast. If you can give a ride or need a ride, please mention it in your RSVP. For those who wish to come independently, Amy will be waiting at the front entrance of the Faire with a Meetup sign between 11:30-11:45 am.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Due to the special circumstances of this event, there are only 'Yes' or 'No' RSVPs. Please RSVP 'Yes' if you are pretty sure you can make it, as we'll be watching the headcount.
  • Tickets for entry can be bought on-site for $26. Save a dollar by using this coupon! Please note that they only accept cash (no credit cards!). Food, drink and rides cost extra.
  • We'll be bringing some cards and board games for some festive game playing during lunchtime if you are interested.
  • Rain will cancel this event. We'll send a notice no later than the night before if we decide to do so.

If you haven't experienced King's Richard's Faire before, here's your chance! Enjoy it with the C&C crew!
