Good Friends and Food in Medford

photoBoston Cards and Conversation

Come join Maria and the C&C crew over at Not Your Average Joe's in Medford for a night of open fun and games. Whether you prefer strategy games, card games or party games (or just want to meet people!), tonight will be your opportunity! There have been a lot of new additions to the group, and it's great to see new friendships being made over board games...

Although we start around 6:30pm or so, early birds can take advantage of their half-price happy hour menu. These are full-portion sized appetizers for real cheap! If not, you'll still be able to take advantage of the monthly specials.

Fall is just around the corner... come outside and enjoy the warm weather while it lasts!

HOW TO GET THERE

This location is easily accessible from Rt. 16, Rt. 28 and Rt. 93, and is walking distance from the T, near the new Station Landing apartment complex. Here is a map of the area.

By Subway: Take the Orange Line to Wellington. Walk over the skybridge and cross through the parking lot. Upon exiting the garage, you'll see a building complex (SL75) across the street. Cross the street and take a right. Follow around this building and you'll find Not Your Average Joe's on the opposite side of the street.

By Car: If you are driving, be aware that Station Landing is at the intersection of Rt. 16 and Rt. 28, and you can enter the Station Landing complex from the north-bound side of Rt. 28, or the east-bound side of Rt. 16. There are a number of stores in the Station Landing complex -- look for the Margarita's, Starbucks or Not Your Average Joe's signs. NYAJ is located right off of Rte. 28. Although there is free parking all around the building, we recommend that C&C members park in the garage underneath the restaurant.

Fantasy Football Draft

photoPlay The Classics Board Game Meetup

This is not a typical event.

Several of us from the Play the Classics group are forming a new fantasy football league, and you're invited to join us next week for a live draft to kickoff the season. We have three requirements:

1) You have a Yahoo ID (they're free)
2) You have a laptop
3) You're willing to stay active in the league throughout the entire season

Arrive at my place around 7 p.m. Bring snacks (optional). I'll make sure everyone is registered for the league and able to access the internet. The draft will start promptly at 8 p.m.

The RSVP list will close at midnight on Monday night. If we can't get enough local people, I'll open up the league to the public. In any case, the draft will still take place at my apartment on Tuesday, Sept. 7.

Parking on my street can be difficult at night. Look on the other side of Bernardo if you can't find a spot.

When you are standing in front of my building, there is a driveway to the right and a walkway to the left. Take the walkway to the back and go up the stairs to the second floor. Look for Unit D. Please be prepared to take your shoes off when you come inside the apartment.

Magic: The Gathering in Medford

photoBoston Cards and Conversation

Come join Veronica and friends for a night of Magic: The Gathering over at Not Your Average Joe's! This event is part of our "Wednesday Night Magic" series.

It doesn't matter if you are an expert planeswalker, or don't know anything about Magic: The Gathering -- you can come to play or learn this amazing strategy game. There are will be two tables - one for beginners who want to learn how to play, and experienced players who just want to duel biggrin All decks of all types are welcome for this "casual play" event. If you want to learn, no cards necessary!

Created by a mathematics professor and game designer in the early 90's, Magic: The Gathering has been one of the most successful trading card games in recent history. Although the game's fantasy motif is marketed to younger players, its strategic gameplay and card artwork has appealed to players of all ages. Don't let the theme or marketing fool you: this is truly "chess with cards". Any player who likes critical thinking will enjoy this game.

Thomas Apartments Whist Game

photoThomas Apartments Whist Group

I run a Duplicate Whist Game in Taunton MA. on Thursday
nights twice a month.
My game is on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month at 7:00pm.

Duplicate Whist if you have never played it, is played just
like regular Whist.

The only differences are the cards are passed on trays called
boards from table to table.

Each board will take its turn in being trump starting with
Hearts then Diamonds, Spades, Clubs, and No Trump.

So basically it's the same game without cutting the deck and
dealing out on every hand.

You also play with the same partner for the whole night; you
don't change partners like in the traditional Whist Party.

You can come with a partner or come yourself.

Duplicate Whist is a good game for small groups.

We normally between 5 to 8 tables on most nights.

There are no prizes; you will just get a score card, one score
card for each pair.

The cost is free, just a donation cover refreshments.

I hope you can come we would love to have you. And bring some
folks together who like to play and enjoy the game.

Not Cards: King Richard's Faire

photoBoston Cards and Conversation

Huzzah! After last years trip to King Richard's Faire, we're decided to do it again!

For those who aren't familar with the Faire:

King Richard’s Faire is New England’s largest and longest-running Renaissance Festival. It is a vivid recreation of a 16th century English marketplace at festival time. Actors, dancers, puppeteers, jugglers, minstrels, mimes, magicians and musicians perform each weekend. Many new acts have been added to the list this year along with a jam-packed schedule of special events that encourages faire goers to join in the fun. The Faire is located in Carver, Massachusetts.

Here are some highlights from last year's trip:

For more information, visit their website: http://www.kingrichar...

HOW WE WILL MEET
We'll attempt to carpool where possible. Some of us will meet up prior to the event for breakfast. If you can give a ride or need a ride, please mention it in your RSVP. For those who wish to come independently, Amy will be waiting at the front entrance of the Faire with a Meetup sign between 11:30-11:45 am.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Due to the special circumstances of this event, there are only 'Yes' or 'No' RSVPs. Please RSVP 'Yes' if you are pretty sure you can make it, as we'll be watching the headcount.
  • Tickets for entry can be bought on-site for $26. Save a dollar by using this coupon! Please note that they only accept cash (no credit cards!). Food, drink and rides cost extra.
  • We'll be bringing some cards and board games for some festive game playing during lunchtime if you are interested.
  • Rain will cancel this event. We'll send a notice no later than the night before if we decide to do so.

If you haven't experienced King's Richard's Faire before, here's your chance! Enjoy it with the C&C crew!

Cards Meetup

photoSacramento Area Spades and Other Card Games

We will be playing Spades and other games depending on what everyone wants to play. So when you RSVP, note which game you are interested in.

Pinochle and Spades are usually played with 4 people. It has been a challenge to plan events with a multiple of 4 players in attendance. We would like to attempt to fill tables of 4, but if we have too many/too few people, we will try to play games other than Spades or Pinochle, that will accommodate the number of people we have, so please come with a spirit of adventure for something new. Ideally, we are trying to fill tables with exactly 4 people, so please do update your RSVP as soon as possible if your plans change.

Bring a small snack to share if you wish, and your own beverage.
